Reasoning Notes | Direction Sense

                                    Direction sense is an important topic when it comes to all banking and government exams. Every year, almost 3-5 direction sense questions are asked in the reasoning section of SBI exams as well as other major banking exams such as IBPS Clerk, IBPS PO, RBI Grade ‘B’, RBI Assistant etc. For instance, in the recently conducted SBI Clerk Prelims 2018, there were 3 questions from the topic, direction sense.

Shadows and Formation

During Sunrise (morning)
  1. If a person facing towards Sun, the shadow will be towards his back or in west.
  2. If a person facing towards South, the shadow will be towards his right.
  3. If a person facing towards West, the shadow will be towards his front.
  4. If a person facing towards North, the shadow will be towards his left.
During Sunset (evening)
  1. If a person facing towards Sun, the shadow will be towards his back or in East.
  2. If a person facing towards North, the shadow will be towards his right.
  3. If a person facing towards East, the shadow will be towards his front.
  4. If a person facing towards South, the shadow will be towards his left. 
 At 12'o clock
There is No shadow at the time.At this time the sun is exactly above our head ,so no shadow is formed at 12'o clock

Eg. 1  Aman starts from his house and walks 2 km east up to his class and turns southwards and walks 1 km up to his friend’s house. At the friend’s house, he turns to east and walks 2 km up to his school. He then turns northwards and walks 4 km to the garden. How far is he from his house?

a. 5 km
b. 7 km
c. 4 km
d. 2.5 km
e. None of these 
Solution:
 

Distance from his house = 
= 5 km
He is 5 Km from his house.


 Eg. One morning, Reema and Soni where standing facing each other.Reema shadow fell towards his right.Which direction Soni facing?
a. North 
b. North-East
c. West
d. South
e. None of these
Solution:
In the moring the sun is in the East so that shadow will form in West. Thus Reema’s right is west. i.e Reema facing south.Hence Soni facing North.


Eg.3   A person rode his bicycle Northwards, then turned left and rode one km and again turned left and rode 1km and again turned left and rode 2km. He found himself exactly 1km west of his starting point.How far did he ride Northwards initially?
a. 1km
b. 2km
c. 3km
d. 4km
e. None of these

Solution:
According  to the question-

 AB=DC=1km

 Eg. Sita starts from point A and travels towards north for 2 km, then she takes a turn of 60° to her right and travel for another 2km then, she takes a turn of 120° her right and travel for another 2km.Finally, she takes a turn of 135° to her left.What is the direction she is finally facing
a. North
b. South-West
c. East
d. North-East
e. Cannot be determined

Solution:
 She finally face is North-East.
