Reasoning Notes | Order and Ranking

From this topic to different types of questions can be formed based on position or the rank of the persons in the row. There are many different types of cases which are asked from order and ranking. Here, below are the types of these cases-

1 The rank of a person from the right or left side
2 Total number of people for the data which is given
3 Maximum or minimum number of people in one row
4 Total number of people between the two people
5 After interchanging the position rank of a person

1. To find the total number of the person sitting in a row or column

➔ When the rank of a person is given from both sides (i.e. from left and right both) of the row
 (r1 + r2) – 1 = Total

Eg.1 Sonal is 18th from the left and 19th from right in a row. Total number of students in a row is,
Solution:
(18 + 19) – 1 = 37 – 1 = 36.

When the rank of two persons and the number of persons sitting between them is given
(r1 + r2) + Number of middle persons.

2. In a class, Sohan's rank is 19th from the left and Sohail rank is 7th from the right. If 6 students are sitting between w them then calculate the total number of students in the class.
 Solution:
(19 + 7) + 6 = 32.

2. To find rank from either left/top or from right/bottom side

 (Total + 1) – Given rank = Required rank.
3.  Priya is 24th from the right in a row of 40 girls. What is her position from the left end?
Solution:
(40 + 1) – 24 = 41 – 24 = 17.

3. To find the number of persons sitting between any two persons:
 For simple case-
Total – (Rank from left + Rank from Right).

4. In a class of 120 students, Vivek is 44th from the left and Yash is 46th from the right. Find the total number of students sitting between them?
Solution:
 120 – (44 + 46) = 120 – 90 = 30.

For overlapping case:
(Rank from left + Rank from right)–(Total + 2).

5. In a class of 90 students, Ram is 67th from the top and Ramesh is 57th from the bottom. Number of students sitting between Ram and Ramesh is
Solution:
(67 + 57) = 124 > 90, so it is a case of overlapping. Thus, the total number of students sitting between them is 124 – (90+2) = 32.

Note: When (Left + Right) position > The total number of persons, it is called the case of overlapping.

4. Maximum or minimum number of people in one row

In this scenario, the position of two persons is given and their positions are interchanged in a row. Here the interchanging the position for a 1st person is from the same side like that before the interchange.

So, a new position for the 2nd person from the side is the position of the 2nd person from the similar side before the interchange + (position of 1st after the interchange – position of 1st before interchange from the similar side).

Total people = Sum of the person from both the sides – 1.
Total people between two persons = Difference in the people’s position who position from the similar side after and before the interchange is provided – 1.

6.
Pranali is 13th from the left side and Kanak is 20th from the right side in a row. They decided to interchange their positions, now Pranali becomes 18th from the left side. What will Kanak’s position from the right?
Solution:
Total girls given in the row = Right side + Left side – 1. This is 18 + 20 – 1 = 37. Kanak’s position from the right side = Total number of girls – Left end + 1 = 37 – 13 + 1 = 25
