Reasoning Notes | Statement and assumption

The questions from statements and assumptions feature regularly in competitive exams. In these questions, a statement is given in the question and it is followed by two or more assumptions. For the correct answer, the student needs to assess the given statement and decide which of the given assumption is implicit to the statement in the question above.
Eg. Statement:- “Why should we not protest? When we ask for drinking water they give us Pepsi and Coca-Cola”. –A politician in an interview.
Assumptions:-
I. Only drinking water is good for people’s health.
II. Providing people with drinking water is more important than providing Pepsi and Coca-Cola.
III. Pepsi and Coca-Cola do not contain healthy drinking water.
Solution:-
Only the IInd assumption will implicit.
Politician considers drinking water more important than Pepsi and Coca-Cola than only he shows anger. And 1st and IIIrd cannot be assumed because in the 1st assumption “only” is mentioned and we cannot assume that Pepsi and Coca-Cola does not contain healthy drinking water.

1. Statement: Go by aeroplane to reach Aurangabad from Mumbai quickly.
Assumptions:
(I) Mumbai and Aurangabad are connected by aeroplane service.
(II) There are no other means of going from Mumbai to Aurangabad.

Q1. Statement: “Please drop this letter in the letterbox,” Shyam said to his assistant.
Assumptions
1. The assistant knows the address where the letter needs to be sent.
2. The assistant will follow the instructions.
Answer- 2.

Q2. Statement: It is very dangerous to lean out of the moving train.
Assumptions
1. Those who lean out of the moving train runs the risk of getting hurt.
2. Generally, no person likes to get hurt.
